Xhaka’s phenomenal goal opens the Bundesliga season [VIDEO]
The Bundesliga kicked off the 2024/25 season with a Borussia Mönchengladbach-Bayer Leverkusen match. Granit Xhaka scored the first goal in the new competition. And what a goal!
The Bundesliga traditionally opens the season with a match involving the reigning champion. This meant that the first round would feature a duel with Bayer Leverkusen. Xabi Alonso’s charges had a trip to Borussia-Park to face Borussia Mönchengladbach. The colts fought to stay up in the last season and ultimately finished 14th.
The first goal of the new season came in the 12th minute. It was scored by Granit Xhaka, a Bayer midfielder and former Borussia player. Jeremie Frimpong moved down the right flank. He played into the penalty area. Nico Elvedi intercepted the cross. The Swiss kicked it out in front of the penalty area. Xhaka got to the ball. He tried to shoot without receiving it.
Jonas Omlin had no chance of a successful intervention – the atomic shot was unstoppable. The ball went into the net just off the post. Although Xhaka made a wonderful goal, he did not celebrate the goal. The 31-year-old, as mentioned above, has previously donned the shirt of the team from Mönchengladbach. He spent four seasons at Borussia-Park, and in the summer of 2016 he moved to Arsenal.
