Wolverhampton Wanderers really needed a break after a tough start to their Premier League season. They lost three out of their first four matches and only managed to win once, a narrow 1-0 victory over struggling Everton.
The key to their success in that match was keeping a clean sheet, which hasn’t happened often lately.
In fact, they’ve only won twice in the last 37 Premier League games where they conceded a goal, drawing eight times and losing 27.
Manager Gary O’Neil surely didn’t plan for such a rocky start when he took over at Molineux. Instead of aiming for a mid-table finish, they are now more focused on avoiding relegation.
And things are about to get even tougher as they face Liverpool, a team that has been their nemesis with nine league defeats since they returned to the top flight in 2018/19.
Liverpool’s manager, Jürgen Klopp, won’t be taking the three points for granted, even though they suffered a 3-0 loss in the Black Country last season. Liverpool has had an excellent start to this season, with three wins and one draw. A win here could put them at the top of the league, although that might not last long.
The Reds have a chance to leapfrog Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City thanks to their impressive 15-game unbeaten streak, with 10 wins and 5 draws.
This is the fifth time they’ve managed such a streak under Klopp’s leadership. Interestingly, their main challenge seems to be playing early Saturday matches, as they didn’t win any of their six early kick-offs last season, drawing 3 and losing 3, with 5 of them being away matches, where they drew 2 and lost 3.
Players to watch for during Wolves vs. Liverpool
Keep an eye on two key players in this match. Hwang Hee-chan has been a crucial substitute for Wolves, scoring half of their Premier League goals this season.
However, he might have a tough time outperforming Mohamed Salah, who is chasing a goal or assist in his 11th consecutive Premier League match, with 5 goals and 7 assists.
Salah could become only the fourth player ever to assist in five consecutive Premier League away matches.
