Official: Manuel Neuer relieves himself of international duty

Manuel Neuer announced via Instagram that he has decided to end his international career. The 38-year-old will no longer play for the national team.

Manuel Neuer posted a video on social media on Wednesday afternoon, revealing that the 38-year-old goalkeeper has ended his international career. After much consideration, the experienced goalkeeper decided to give up his place to younger colleagues and thus fully focus on club football.

The 193cm goalkeeper made his debut for Germany in 2009. Joachim Loew’s team won 7-2 against the United Arab Emirates, with Manuel Neuer playing the entire tournament. All told, the 38-year-old made 124 appearances for the national team, conceding 118 goals and keeping 51 clean sheets.

The greatest success of the Bayern Munich goalkeeper was winning the World Cup in 2014. Let us recall that Germany hosted this year’s European Championship, but failed at home and was eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 1:2 defeat to Spain. As it turned out, Manuel Neuer stood between the posts for Die Mannschaft for the last time.

The FC Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen graduate has no intention of ending his career entirely. The valued goalkeeper will continue to play for Bayern Munich, with whom he will try to regain the Bundesliga title. The veteran’s contract with the Bavarian giant runs until June 30, 2025. Manuel Neuer has been playing for Die Roten since 2011.
