Lazio Blames Manchester United For Greenwood’s Failed Transfer

Lazio has blamed Manchester United for its failed attempt to sign Mason Greenwood, who opted to sign with Getafe on the final day of the transfer window.

The 21-year-old forward Mason Greenwood has officially joined Getafe in La Liga. While there is no transfer fee, Getafe will pay a portion of his salary during the loan period.

Initially, it appeared that Greenwood would play in Serie A, as Lazio expressed significant interest in him on the transfer deadline.

Claudio Lotito, the president of Lazio, maintained until the very end that Greenwood was anxious to join the team.

‘I tried until the last minute,’ Lotito told La Lazio Siamo Noi

However, Manchester United was held solely responsible for the deal’s failure because they allegedly neglected to process the necessary paperwork on time.

“They didn’t countersign in time. He wanted to come to Lazio,” he added.

John Murtough, Manchester United chief, negotiated Greenwood’s transfer to Getafe.

The transfer was verified in the final hours of the transfer window, securing Greenwood’s position in La Liga for the upcoming season.

Manchester United concluded their own investigation due to Greenwood’s absence from professional football since December 2021, following his arrest in January 2022 for multiple allegations, including attempted rape.

As a result, they determined that Greenwood’s future no longer belonged at Old Trafford and granted him a loan exit with a likely permanent departure following the conclusion of his time at Getafe.
