Laphonza Romanique Butler is an American political expert and leader. She has been the president of EMILY’s List since 2021. On October 1, 2023, California Governor Gavin Newsom chose Butler to take the U.S. Senate seat left open when Dianne Feinstein passed away.
Butler was born in Magnolia, Mississippi, as the youngest of three children. Sadly, her father died from heart problems when she was 16 years old. She went to South Pike High School in Magnolia and then Jackson State University.
Starting her career, Butler began as a union organizer, helping nurses in Baltimore and Milwaukee, janitors in Philadelphia, and hospital workers in New Haven, Connecticut. In 2009, she moved to California, where she focused on organizing in-home caregivers and nurses. She also became president of SEIU United Long Term Care Workers, SEIU Local 2015.
In 2013, Butler became the president of the California SEIU State Council. During her time there, she worked hard to increase California’s minimum wage and raise taxes on the wealthiest people. She also supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary while leading SEIU Local 2015.
In 2018, California Governor Jerry Brown appointed Butler to a 12-year position as a regent of the University of California. However, she left this role in 2021.
Later, Butler joined SCRB Strategies in 2018. At SCRB, she played a big role in Kamala Harris’s 2020 presidential campaign and advised Uber on labor matters. She had been a political supporter of Harris since Harris’s 2010 run for California Attorney General.
In 2020, Butler left SCRB to work as the director of public policy and campaigns in North America at Airbnb.
In 2021, Butler became the third president of EMILY’s List, making history as the first black woman and mother to lead the organization.
