FG issues short code to stop calls from illegal loan apps, sends strict warnings

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a warning to loan app companies and telemarketers regarding their improper use of telecom subscribers’ phone numbers for business purposes.

This caution was made public on Thursday, September 7, 2023, through an official notice. The NCC emphasizes that individuals found guilty of this practice will face arrest and prosecution.

The NCC strongly condemns the unauthorized utilization of people’s phone numbers without their consent, considering it a breach of privacy.

It refuted claims that it permits telemarketers to collect phone numbers from its database, labelling such allegations as baseless.

To address this issue, the NCC advises subscribers to employ the Do Not Disturb (DND) Short Code to manage their Value Added Services subscriptions and opt out of receiving unsolicited text messages and marketing pitches from telemarketers. Subscribers can activate full DND by texting STOP to 2442.

Furthermore, the NCC encourages subscribers who encounter unlawful telemarketing activities to report such incidents by dialing its toll-free number, 622, to ensure appropriate actions are taken.
