10 most expensive Nigerian foods after subsidy removal in 2024

Food is essential for human life. Food provides us with energy and strength. Since the Nigerian government removed the fuel subsidy, food prices in the country have been rising.

Research indicates that food prices have increased by 150% within the last year.

The Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has recently released a new table that measures the prices of various foods consumed in the country. Here are the top 10 most price-increased Nigerian food after subsidy removal in 2024.

Potato

Potato increased the most, by 182.04%, among all food items in one year according to NBS.

Potatoes that vendors are selling for N286.26 in April 2023 are now selling for N807.35 in April 2024.

Similarly, they sold Irish potatoes for N609.57 in April 2023 but now sell them for N1,413.57 in April 2024. This shows a 149.18% price increase for this food item.

Plantain

The price of Plantain rose by 168.29%.

Vendors sold Plantain for N372.89 in April 2023 but now sell them for N1000.41.

Similarly, the price of bananas increased by 144.68%.

Vendors sold ripe bananas for N412.39 in April 2023 but now sell them for N1009.05.

Ọfada rice

Many people like Ọfada rice for its aroma and taste. However, due to rising food prices, its cost increased by 158%.

Vendors sold Ọfada rice for N601.61 in April 2023 but now sell it for N1,552.18 in April 2024.

Local rice

The price of Local rice rose by 155.93%.

Vendors sold local rice for N546.76 in April 2023 but now sell it for N1,399.34 in April 2024.

Rice

The price of rice increased by 151.95%.

Vendors sold rice for N609.57 in April 2023 but now sell it for N1,535.83 in April 2024.

Similarly, the price of heavy rice rose by 135.62%.

Vendors sold 1kg of heavy rice for N631.50 in April 2023 but now sell it for N1,487.91 in April 2024.

Yam

Many people like yam as a food especially when prepared with eggs or pounded but now it is expensive.

The price of yam increased by 154.19% within one year.

Vendors sold yam for N444.69 in April 2023 but now sell it for N1,130.37 in April 2024.

Chicken feet

Vendors sold chicken legs for N1,115.29 in April 2023 but now sell them for N2,660.90 in 2024.

This shows a 138.58% increase compared to the amount sold last year.
