T-20 World Cup: Nigeria’s U-19 cricket team defies odds to progress

Nigeria’s U 19 Cricket Team Defied Odds to Progress

Nigeria’s female Under-19 cricket team, known as the Junior Female Yellow Greens, has successfully advanced to the Super 6 stage of the 2025 ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia.
In this next phase, the Junior Female Yellow Greens will take on England and Ireland.

Although the Junior Female Yellow Greens faced a setback in their final group match, suffering a 41-run defeat to South Africa due to the DLS method, their earlier achievements, including a remarkable two-run victory over New Zealand and a shared points outcome against Samoa, were instrumental in securing their place as the second-best team in Group C.

In their match against South Africa, which marked a significant rivalry as the second meeting between the two in a year, captain Piety Lucky won the toss and opted to send the formidable South African team to bat first. South Africa began strong, with Simone Lourens hitting four boundaries before Lucky claimed the wicket in the seventh over. However, the match was curtailed to eight overs due to rain.

Kayla Reyneke also made a notable impact with her bowling as South Africa wrapped up their innings at 49 for 2. Nigeria’s batting performance faced challenges, and despite their best efforts, they ended with a score of 24 for 8.

Looking ahead, the Junior Female Yellow Greens are eager to continue their pursuit of history in the Super 6 stage, where they will face England on January 25 and Ireland on January 29. Both England and Ireland entered this stage having performed well in Group B, finishing first and third, respectively.

To enhance their chances of reaching the semi-finals, the Nigerian team will be focusing on gathering points and runs in the upcoming matches, capitalizing on their previous successes to build momentum in the tournament
