The draw for the round of 16 of the Coupe de France took place this Sunday at around 8 p.m. Among the big clubs that qualified are Olympique de Marseille, who beat ASSE (4-0); OL, who qualified after their logical victory against Feignies Aulnoye (1-2), a team in N2; and AS Monaco, who did not tremble to get rid of Union St-Jean (R1) and now hopes to do better than their 1/8th final last year (the Monegasques had been eliminated by Rouen).
A few underdogs also enjoyed an unexpected interlude during this round of 32. We are thinking in particular of the first two sensations of Friday evening, namely Espaly (N3), who beat Dijon (N1), and Haguenau (N2), who beat Boulogne (N1). On Saturday, other amateurs also shook up the hierarchy. Bourgoin-Jallieu (N3) humiliated Martigues (4-1), when Cannes (N2) surprised Grenoble, and Stade Briochin (N2) beat Le Havre (1-0). But we must give Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and the sensation of this round of 32 comes to us from Puy-en-Velay, a National 2 club that blew Montpellier away (4-0). As a reminder, all these qualifiers will play their round of 16 between January 13 and 16.
Coming back to the draw, we can imagine that Espaly fans must have smiled when they learned the identity of their opponent. After knocking out Dijon, the National 3 residents will indeed host the winner of the last 32nd final between Lens and PSG this Sunday evening. For their part, the Marseillais, and even the Lillois, must have laughed bitterly when they discovered that they would meet again, while their last confrontation had ended in a draw in the championship last weekend (1-1).
Among the big names in Ligue 1, we find OL, winner of Feignies-Aulnoye in the 32nd round, and who will this time have on the menu a derby against one of the last small thumbs of the Coupe de France, FC Bourgoin-Jallieu (N3), who beat Martigues on Saturday. We do not yet know in which stadium the match will be played. Monaco, for its part, will travel to Reims, while Brest will meet Nantes for this third and final duel between Ligue 1 teams. As a reminder, the Finistériens corrected their counterparts in the championship last week (4-1).
