Career
Harwell started as a rapper with the group F.O.S. (Freedom of Speech) but changed direction after hearing Dr. Dre’s 1992 album “The Chronic.”
In 1994, Greg Camp, along with Harwell and two others, founded Smash Mouth. Their big hit came in 1997 with “Walkin’ on the Sun.” Another success followed in 1999 with “All Star,” thanks to its appearance in the 2001 film “Shrek.”
Harwell appeared on VH1’s “The Surreal Life” in 2006 and made guest appearances on TV and radio. He also had a small role in the 2001 film “Rat Race” and contributed songs to a 2013 animated film.
During a concert in 2016, Harwell collapsed on stage and had to be hospitalized. The band continued without him.
In August 2020, the band performed at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, later linked to a COVID-19 outbreak.
In October 2021, at a festival in New York, Harwell displayed concerning behaviour and announced his retirement due to health issues.
